Great news!

As many of you may know, Emma Claire's weight has been a concern of mine for a long time...I know it's nothing to be worried about, but I have to find things to stress about and this has been it for most of her life. I don't know why, but having a small baby has always bugged me.

However, we discovered on Friday that she has had a huge growth spurt and gained 2 lbs in the past 4 weeks! She's up to 19 lb 10 oz and in almost the 50th percentile. I don't know her length, but it's probably still close to the 25th percentile which results in lots and lots of fat and rolls, which I just LOVE! :)

No matter what her size may be, I know that she's happy, healthy, and very loved, so I'm going to STOP finding things to worry about!

P.S. The reason we went to the doctor and had her weighed was because our pediatrician wanted to do a lead test on both kiddos since we now live in an older home with lead possibly in the paint. We won't find out the results for another couple of weeks, but cross your fingers that it comes back normal. Thanks! :)

Funny boy

This morning I was changing Emma Claire's diaper, and Grayson came running in holding his rear end, saying, "I burp! I burp! I burp my bottom!!". I doubled over laughing and then explained that he just pooted. :)

Thursday Thirteen

13 ways we have gone "green" (in honor of Earth Day, which was Tuesday):

1. We recycle everything that we can--paper, cans, plastic, and glass. Some weeks we have more recycling than we do bags of trash, and that just thrills me! :)

2. I take reusable bags to the grocery store. I got them at One Bag at a Time, for about $1 per bag, and a couple of the grocery stores actually give me a discount (20 cents a bag, but it adds up!) for using them. On the occasional visit where I forget the bags, I get plastic bags that I reuse for taking out dirty diapers.

3. We use compact fluorescent lightbulbs in the lamps that we use most often.

4. We turn the lights off in rooms that we're not using.

5. We don't let the sink faucet run when brushing our teeth.

6. We use green cleaners. I use lots of vinegar and baking soda (they clean almost anything!) and use Mrs. Meyers Clean Day household cleaners and hand soap, which use natural, renewable plant resources, are biodegradable, and have no harmful fumes. I LOVE Mrs. Meyers products and highly recommend them!

7. I wash all of our clothes in cold water and hang many of them to dry.

8. I don't use the "heated dry" feature on our dishwasher. A dish towel works just as well and uses less energy (although a little more on my part!).

9. I rarely buy bottled water. A bottle from home filled with water from the tap works just as well.

10. I buy 90% of the children's wardrobe from Ebay and consignment sales. I'm very picky about their clothes and almost always get adorable boutique clothes for a fraction of the retail cost. I could probably do an entire blog post on my addiction to ebay. :)

11. All of the boxes that we used when we moved were pre-used, and I listed them on Freecycle after we were finished with them so somebody else could use them.

12. I use Freecycle to get rid of items we don't use anymore.

13. We eat many organic foods, especially milk, chicken, fruits, and veggies. Emma Claire eats only organic baby food.

New trick

Emma Claire saw her friend Grace doing this this morning and joined right in like she's been doing it forever! This child constantly amazes me! :)

10 months old!

I just cannot believe that my baby girl is already 10 months old! Emma Claire is growing up WAY too quickly. Even though she's only been here for 10 months, it's hard to remember life without our sweet little pumpkin. She's into everything--crawling, pulling up, and cruising around couches and tables. She can clap and wave, and says "ball", "mama", "boom", "uh-oh", "pop pop", and "dada". She's doing things so much earlier than Grayson did, but I guess that comes with being the second child. Emma Claire is such a happy, headstrong girl who goes with the flow yet knows what she wants . She loves balls, books, having her back scratched, eating things off of the floor, and toy cars, trucks and trains. God has blessed us and for that we are very thankful. :)

Happy birthday, Ben!!

Ben turned the big 3-0 yesterday and we've been celebrating since Friday. On Friday I surprised him by whisking him away to St. Augustine for the weekend---what a fun trip! Ben's parents kept the children for us (thanks again, Carroll and Nancy!) and we were able to spend our first trip away together with just the two of us since before Grayson was born. We stayed at Casa Monica Hotel, which was absolutely gorgeous and right in the middle of the historic district. We went on a carriage tour, a trolley tour, a ghost tour (we loved us some tours!), went shopping, and ate some fabulous meals. It was so nice to spend time as a couple instead of parents for a weekend, even though the children monopolized many of our conversations. :)

We finished up the birthday celebration with a little party last night with 20 of our closest friends. Everybody came over for beer and cake for our first party at our new house. Happy birthday, old man!!

Catching up...

Sorry I've been a bad blogger lately! We've been crazy busy and my computer has been in the shop for a couple of weeks. I spent today catching up on laundry and cleaning so I could devote tonight solely to blogging. :) Get ready for lots of pictures and updates, and I promise not to be so scarce anymore!

EWWWW

Moments like this make me remember how much FUN (and gross!) it is to have a little boy:

Ben picked Grayson up from school today, and when Grayson walked into the house I noticed a big brown smudge on his shirt. It's not unusual for him to have dirt/food/paint/etc. on his clothes when he comes home from school, so I didn't think much of it...until Ben told me what it was. Grayson's teacher let Ben know that the brown stuff on Grayson's shirt is the remains of a caterpillar...GROSS!!! They're learning about caterpillars this week and Grayson decided to smash his when it was crawling on his chest. Hilarious and disgusting at the same time---I love it! :)

10 or 15 things...

Michelle tagged me to write 10-15 things you might not know about me, so here goes...

1. I was named after my two grandmothers, Margaret and Grace.

2. Long fingernails gross me out.

3. I'm obsessive about turning lights off in a room that nobody is in.

4. I've been known to bring cans and bottles home from a party so I can recycle them.

5. I hold my breath when I drive by a dead animal on the road.

6. I host a bible study that my friend Christie and I lead at my house every Sunday afternoon.

7. I rarely go to the movies---my attention span is incredibly short and no matter how good the movie is I end up getting bored and antsy about 30 minutes into it. I'd rather rent a movie (which I only do a couple times a year) and stop and start it as much as I want to.

8. I've been a bridesmaid in 10 weddings.

9. I love, love, LOVE mayonnaise and put it on as many things as I can...hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, chicken fingers, etc.

10. I hate ketchup and mustard. Mayo is the only condiment I eat.

11. Boggle is my favorite game.

12. I love to read, and due to my short attention span I'm usually reading two or three books at the same time. Right now I'm reading "Beach House" by Mary Alice Monroe and "How to Raise a Happy and Unspoiled Child". I alternate reading them before bed at night.

I am going to tag Christie, Dena, and Lauren. Y'all are next!!

Visit with an old friend...

Last Friday we went to Savannah (Tybee Island, actually) for a couple of hours to see my friend Andrea, who was there on vacation with her husband and baby. Andrea and I were friends in high school and lost touch after graduating (11 years ago...wow!), so this was the first time we'd seen each other in 11 years. She and her husband Joel have a baby girl named Savannah, who is just 5 days younger than Emma Claire. It was great catching up with Andrea and meeting her hubby and sweet little Savannah. :)
